Apple's Cook: Environment trumps profits

  • Apple Inc.’s Tim Cook seems to be picking his battles based on his conservation stances.

Cook, according to the Earth Techling website (via Mac Observer), laid into an investor who called for the tech giant (Nasdaq: AAPL) to commit to pouring resources into ensuring profitability as opposed to slashing carbon emissions. Apple has committed to running all of its operations on renewables such as solar.

Cook told the investor that Apple doesn’t consider “the bloody ROI” in terms of environmental issues, among a litany of topics that also included making its products accessible for disabled users and ensuring workers’ safety. Press reports identified the investor as a representative of The National Center for Public Policy Research, which takes issue with the notion of climate change.

The Public Policy Research group had presented a shareholder resolution asking Apple to be transparent about its environmental activism.

“Mr. Cook made it very clear to me that if I, or any other investor, was more concerned with return on investment than reducing carbon dioxide emissions, my investment is no longer welcome at Apple,” said Justin Danhof, director of the National Center’s Free Enterprise Project in a release on the group’s website.

“The company’s CEO fervently wants investors who care more about return on investments than reducing CO2 emissions to no longer invest in Apple. Maybe they should take him up on that advice.”

Apple is using the Direct Access program to purchase renewable energy wholesale for its Prineville data center. “Apple is using this program to opt out of the default grid mix and directly access local renewable energy sources, such as wind, hydro, solar, and geothermal power — enough to power the entire facility,” the company reports on its website.
